We departed from between Oswego Lock 8 and 7 at 7:30 AM and traveled through locks 7 – lock 1, a distance of 20.6 miles. Lock 1 is located at the south end of the Oswego Canal in the town of Phoenix, NY about 2 miles north of the Eire Canal. We ended up staying here as the dock was free but you could donate to the city. There was a produce stand beside the canal and we needed fresh vegies. On the way back to the boat we came across a laundry mat so decided to stay for the night knowing that this would be the last time we needed laundry on the boat trip. They have water, power, toilets and payable showers for boaters. We also needed fuel as we used a bit traveling from Keewaydin, NY to Phoenix, NY. We did have to walk 6 blocks to the gas station with our two 5 gallon jugs. We also filled with water for the last time on the trip.

After finishing all those chores we decided to treat ourselves to a dinner at a local brewery.

The next morning we left about 6:30 since we were tied to a dock Richard took off by himself as I was still asleep. He ran into fog where the Oswego meets the Erie and had to travel about 4 mph before he got out of the fog bank. By the time he arrived at the first lock it was almost 8 and I was up and ready for the day. It is pleasant sometimes to just lay in bed and read early in the morning as Richard is piloting somewhere. We traveled 57.5 miles to lock 20 at Whitesboro today. Once you get past Lake Oneida the water in the Erie starts to have trash and silt in it. So not a place to swim for a bath. There is a wonderful trail system along the Erie that people hike and bike. We also walked along this trail in the evenings.

Today we travel 25.3 miles from Lock 20 to Lock 17 at Little Falls NY. The Lions Club has a nice wall and small dock here along with showers for only a dollar a foot of boat length. After arriving and checking in, we were told the annual Garlic Festival was taking place downtown, so we walked over the canal bridge to the Festival. We spent most of the rest of the day at the Festival. I even met the Garlic King. We sat for quite a while listening to an Irish folk band. That evening we met three Canadians on a sailboat headed for the Bahamas for the winter. We would travel with them for the next 2 days.
